A Roman Holiday

On the weekend of December the 11th we took our last trip out for 2010 for a holiday in Rome. It was warmer than London and a gorgeous city with good food and amazing sites. As we do best, we covered the majority of the sites in our 48 hr visit to Rome. The first day starting with the Vatican Museum (Diana it was a million times better than when we went in July, no lines, Sistine Chapel was quiet enough to enjoy and it wasn't insanely hot) and then a visit to St. Peter's Basilica and the last people allowed entrance to the Tomb of the Popes. We then walked past Castle St Angel and made our way to Piazza Navano where lo and behold there was a Christmas market in full force with games and trinkets for sale (I noticed a distinct witch theme). We then walked over to the Pantheon (not before I bought my meloncello and white truffle olive oil) which was still under construction (now making it 3 for 3 times I've visited its been under construction). From there we bee lined it to San Crispino and the Trevi Fountain, which is beautiful at night. And not to be defeated on our whirlwind tour we made our way the Spanish Steps before grabbing a midnight snack of McDonalds and heading to bed.

The second day was all about Ancient Rome. We went to the Coloseum and walked around, imagining what it would have been like to be a spectator back then. We then walked down past the ruins and the main street was closed to traffic for some reason where there were guys dressed like Roman soldiers play fighting in the streets, a group of modern dressed carolers singing Christmas and pop songs, and a group of capoeira martial artists playing music and fighting in the street. I have no idea what it was about but it was pretty cool! We then actually went up and in the Memorial to Vittorio Emanuel II and left just in time to catch the light rain and the closing of the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. And on our way to Circus Maximus and to the airport we bump into Laura Bailey (fellow LBSer and futboler) on the streets of Rome having a Love, Eat, Pray moment (last minute decision to visit Rome).

Our little version of A Roman Holiday, except he gets to keep the girl in this version =) (oh and I don't get to be a princess)
